  1. “Don’t ask for guarantees. And don’t look to be saved in any one thing, person, machine, or library. Do your own bit of saving, and if you drown, at least die knowing you were heading for shore.”
For me this quote says how you have to stand and take action for what you believe in and not let anyone else tell you otherwise.

    1. I agree with this quote. Some people give up in the middle thinking that it's too hard. However, they should keep on fighting for what they believe in.

    2. I agree. You shouldn't expect others to stand up for you if you don't stand up for yourself.

    3. I agree. It is not going to work if everyone is just sitting there waiting that there will be someone to stand up for themselves (ex. Faber). If all the knowledge people stood up and fought for the books, then books probably wouldn't be banned.

I think this is a great quote because it has more than one meaning and it changes the way someone is looking at life as a whole.

    1. for the most part I agree with you. but to me this has 1 maybe 2 meanings in my eyes. To me this means you should take all opportunity's possible do not settle for things that are handed to you.

    2. Zach, be sure to explain what specifically you are agreeing with. Dylan, go on, what are the different meanings? Be specific

  3. “There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing.”

I chose this quote because it shows that people die for knowledge and books and in a society that isn't allowed to read and get knowledge they all resort to ignorance but as a firefighter you end up questioning why are books worth dying for which is what montag did.

  5. “A book is a loaded gun in the house next door…Who knows who might be the target of the well-read man?”
This quote tells me that books are very powerful. A person with knowledge from books can manipulate others like a gun. For example, billions of people are influenced by the Bible and it had become an important part of their life.

    2. I really like your example of the bible and has made me really get a perspective on the wide reach that books have. I completely agree with your interpretation of what a knowledgeable man can do. I also think a well-read man has the power to enlighten someone versus just manipulation, which is something similar to what Clarisse has done.

    3. I agree with with the well read man. If no one else has the same knowledge as him he could lie and no one else would know otherwise

    4. I think Ray is telling us that a man who reads is so much more powerful than a man who doesn't. The other man doesn't become a gun but the book becomes a tool to manipulate the others. Like Beatty, who knows so much more can manipulate Montag and the other firemen, until Montag learns reads and think individually.

  6. “Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you’re there.” When you make contact with someone or something that you care deeply about, your always attached to it in some way. I think that this represents some unity not just in people but in every thing as a whole, like not just the community of people but everything we have here. Nature, the trees, plants, grass everything we have here we should all be grateful to have.

  7. The quote "If you hide you ignorance, no one will hit you and you'll never learn," resonates with me. I believe ignorance is society's greatest flaw. If you accept the fact the you are living in the dark and seeing only the partisan view that television wants you to see, you will never grow as a person. Books are the key to enlightenment - the "hit on the head", the conclusions you draw from writing and books shape you as a person and make you more opinionated and decisive. It is much better to think for one's self than to have the government decide for you. Reading is the key to an educated and healthy society.

    2. Although I think that this quote can also be interpreted more generally than you did, I certainly agree with your analysis of media's inclination to be biased. Overcoming this problem can be quite difficult, but is also essential.

  8. To the quote “Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.” I think that is just overall true you should live your life to the fullest because you never know when something very bad could go wrong. life also goes by fast to do everything you can and go out and see the world because if you don't you might run of time to do it and you might end up regretting it later.

I like this quote because it tells you that your legacy is your own creation. That you are remembered by what your have done or made.

    1. I agree, but at the same time, the quote is almost terrifying. For me it somewhat feels like I'm being pressured to do something so significant that it totally changes my life and the lives of others around me, in order to live up to other people's standards, even when really the things that I do don't have to be so great.

  10. “If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you’ll never learn.”
In this day and age, we are all so scared of making mistakes and failing. No one wants to be berated or laughed at. But without the failure, we can never truly grow and learn. Being fed knowledge has a completely different effect of the person. Thus hiding your weaknesses and ignorance only harms you in the very end.

  11. “If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you’ll never learn.”

Growing up, I was always, and still am, praised for my intelligence (undeservingly, I think). This sort of praise can be harmful without discipline; I've essentially been conditioned to be scared of failure and, as a result, shy away from risks. To stay stubborn in such a resolute mindset prevents the learning process -- if you never flaunt your inadequacies by taking risks (or, worse, if you don't recognize your ignorance), you'll never make mistakes, and so you'll never learn anything more than the tiny bubble of thoughts that you surround yourself in. On the other hand, if you familiarize yourself with making mistakes (and if you can handle being occasionally disciplined or even belittled), you and your knowledge will ultimately grow.

    2. First, it needs to be said that this was wonderfully (and flawlessly) articulated.
And, yes, I concur with your interpretation of this quote. Being praised for intelligence (and your grades) does instill the mindset to be frightened of failure, and this does indeed prevent us from taking risks, because if we are just commended for being smart, and not our effort, our personalities will never grow and bloom, as well as our outlooks on life.

  12. "There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing.”

This quote was the most prominent to me because it marked the appearance of another Montag, a Montag full of curiosity and wonder for the world around him. It also established the notion that Montag is beginning to understand the significance of imagination in the form of literature (creative expression), as well as making him recognize the impacts that words can have.

    1. I agree with Haley. The "crazy" woman's last actions were to stay and try to save her books, her sacred books. I find this a crucial turning point in the story because Montag begins to question the true values of firemen. As he begins to read, he understands the seemingly odd actions of the woman - the true value of books is intangible, almost ethereal. The true value of books is using 26 letters to create a masterpiece that can inspire, educate, and amaze.

    2. I agree, without knowledge fronm books you become ignorant and like the masses of F451. In F451 knowledge is the difference between Beatty and Mildred.

Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you’re there.” I think this quotes speaks to me because it's basically like the cycle of life. When someone dies, they always leave something behind that reminds people of them. Such as memories of that person.

    1. i agree with this it is true that you do leave behind something after you die because you are leaving your "mark".

  14. One of my favorite quotes is "“If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you’ll never learn.”
The means that if you don't make mistakes, you will never learn. This is a great quote because it tells you to take risk and life is all about taking risks and that help you learn. Ignorance vs. Knowledge is also another theme in F451. In this case (the quote) shows that in order to get knowledge, you need ignorance and show you ignorance so you can learn.

    1. This is good analysis. I didn't think about risk taking when I wrote about this quote. I also think that you could add how Montag sort of hid his ignorance from Clarisse but when she "hit" him and showed him that he wasn't happy, he became enlightened.

  15. “Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.”
this quote means something to me because it says to not take life for granted and to open your eyes and look around at the amazing things that are are around you,it also means that fill your eyes with wonder because there is only so much you can get in a life time, when it says life is more fantastic than any other dream it is saying that if you look around that you will see a lot more than if you had your eyes closed and was dreaming of the things that are sometimes actually happening is real life.

  16. “If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you’ll never learn.” I think that this quote is very significant because the relationship between it and the theme of knowledge vs. ignorance. The quote is saying that if you hide the fact that you have a lack of knowledge, then nobody can point it out for you so that you learn. I found this significant because Montag was "hiding his ignorance" from Clarisse and claiming that he was happy but then she showed him and in turned he gained a lot of knowledge. Once Montag was "enlightened", he saw the society in a whole new way.

    1. Yes I agree that this quote is a good one and it also has a huge role in F451 especially with Montag in the beginning of the novel and eventually clarisse and Faber gave him some knowledge

  17. "The zipper displaces the button and a man lacks just that much time to think while dressing at dawn, a philosophical hour, and thus a melancholy hour." ~ Beatty.

Beatty explains how technology gives you less time to think and how it abolishes individual thought. For example, if you were to send a letter through mail to someone close to you. You think more about what you're writing and feeling than if you were to send an email or message. Technology dampens the amount of thinking put into individual tasks.

  18. “The books are to remind us what asses and fool we are. They’re Caeser’s praetorian guard, whispering as the parade roars down the avenue, “Remember, Caeser, thou art mortal.” Most of us can’t rush around, talking to everyone, know all the cities of the world, we haven’t time, money or that many friends. The things you’re looking for, Montag, are in the world, but the only way the average chap will ever see ninety-nine per cent of them is in a book. Don’t ask for guarantees. And don’t look to be saved in any one thing, person, machine, or library. Do your own bit of saving, and if you drown, at least die knowing you were headed for shore.”

What I think this quote is trying to say is that it's impossible to experience everything the world has to offer. You'll either lack resources, time, or energy. The solution offered is to read about it. Most of the things that someone will learn is through books. Don't believe all of it though. And if you want something to be remembered, don't rely on someone else to publish it for you. Do it yourself, so that way even if no one cares about what happened, you'll know that you tried

  19. "A book is a loaded gun in the house next door...who knows who might be the target if a well-read man?" I think this quote means that books fill you with knowledge, and having a lot knowledge is a very powerful weapon in almost every scenario.

  20. “If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you’ll never learn.”
If you try to hide your ignorance, it means that you know that you are ignorant. If you don't try, you will not experience failure (no one will hit you), and you will not learn from those experiences.

  22. “With school turning out more runners, jumpers, racers, tinkerers, grabbers, snatchers, fliers, and swimmers instead of examiners, critics, knowers, and imaginative creators, the word ‘intellectual,’ of course, became the swear word it deserved to be.”

If the people are stuck with the facts instead of the knowledge and ideas, doing things that they are told to do without thinking about why they are doing it, then they don't want to use their brain to think. The government want that because if the people don't have knowledge, they will not be thinking, and they won't question the society. If everyone feels the society is perfect, there will be no rebellion.

  23. Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.”

I chose this quote because, I like this message it puts out of stepping outside your comfort zone. Take in as much knowledge as you can now so you have something to look back on.
By taking risk you can do big things, The world is a big place and we only have so much time.
