ReplyDeleteI think there is a correlation between cheating and fixed mindsets because everyone who cheats wants a great grade so they are risking a lot to just get a letter on their report cards.
ReplyDeleteI agree but I would like to add that the kids with a fixed mindset think that they are already smart and would get a A on the test but they would still cheat just to make sure that they would get a A
Delete*Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is. On the Lynbrook Campus, most of the people here are of the chinese or indian ethnic groups. Both of these cultures put heavy emphasis into education, and there is a huge pressure on them to do well in school. Adding to that, there is a very heavy(although often ridiculed)stereotype that people of these ethnic groups are good at subjects such as science. This all contributes to a fixed mindset here on campus due to the continued praise for students being quote on quote smart, and at the same time the constant pressure to do well in school lest their parents and their peers shun them. In the end, it all leads to the cheating problem that persists at Lynbrook High School.
I agrees. While there may not exactly be huge pressure from home, students might feel the pressure from the stereotyping that certain ethnic groups are good at certain subjects. This might push the student to take drastic measures, including cheating, to ensure that their record stays perfect. Since Lynbrook is a good school filled with many studious students, students feel an even greater weight on their shoulder to do well.
DeleteI think that there is indeed a correlation between cheating and having a fixed mindset. As mentioned in the videos, people with a fixed mindset care about if they look smart and they care if other people judge them and things like that. In order to look good, people might cheat so that they can brag about how they got 100% on their math test. Also, people with a fixed mindset care more about their grades than if they learn or not. Since they want to get good grades (straight A's), they might want to cheat so that they can choose their grade, which would be 100%.
ReplyDeleteSo are you saying that people can cheat so that they personality is kept. I think you should include somewhere that when somebody cheats then their personality is kept up with their friends and other popular people.
DeletePrompt: Will Smith says he's "motivated by fear". What does that mean? How can we apply that idea to our lives?
ReplyDeleteHe's telling us to push ourselves and try new things. You should keep trying even if you believe that we aren't able to do something. When you have a goal, you should keep trying for that goal no matter what obstacles you encounter. He's telling us to get out of our comfort zone and go beyond what we believe we are capable of.
I see what you are saying. He is telling people that they should try hard for a goal and not giving up even if the thing they are trying to achieve is hard for them. Do you mean that people should try what they fear no matter what?
DeleteHow do you suppose a person could change his mindset?
ReplyDeleteIf somebody wanted to change their mindset from fixed to growth, they could do various things but one key thing that they have to do is make sure that they understand that failing is just another way of improving and to never quit. They should not care how could the people around them are, they should just compete with themselves.
I can see your point in your response. You make a good point about competing with themselves. I also like how you included the point to never quit. Great job.
DeleteI think there is a correlation between cheating and the fixed mindset on campus. I think that people feel the need to cheat because they don't want to fail or get a bad grade. They might feel that if they do, then that means they are not a good student or it's the end of the world. They have a mindset which makes them think that they should not struggle and if they do, then it's not worth trying to solve. These kinds of kids do not like a challenge and feel that their intelligence and smart appearance is threatened if they struggle on something. Also, there is also the pressure to do well in school. So the kids with the fixed mindset will do anything to keep their image up, even cheating.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your answer. People cheat because they feel pressure to always do well. Kids will do anything to do well in life.
Delete*Will Smith says, "Just decide who you're gonna be and the universe will get out of your way." Has that ever happened to you? Explain.
ReplyDeleteWhen Will Smith says that you should just decide who you will be and the world universe will get out of your way, I think he is saying that if you can create a goal that you fully believe in and you know you won't stop until you get to the goal. Nothing will be able to stop you.
I see the truth in your answer. There are always things, goals, ideas, or beliefs that people are so passionate about that they will do anything to try and achieve whatever they are after.
DeleteI think there is a strong correlation between a fixed mindset and cheating. People with fixed mindsets generally do not like to "fail" or to "lose". If they encounter a challenging situation, such as a difficult math problem, students with fixed mindsets will not attempt the problem. However, the fixed mindset brain responds the most to judgment like grades. Since skipping a problem on a test or worksheet may result in a penalty, fixed mindset students are tempted to copy off the answer from another source of work. This is cheating, and there is a strong link from being a person or student who does not like to improve and people cheating.

Delete[I deleted my earlier comment because it was incomplete]
DeleteI agree, people with fixed mindsets really do want to avoid mistakes, even where mistakes are allowed. They would rather get a good grade than get the problems wrong and learn from them.
I really like your analysis! It's really thorough, and you prove your point really well using the problem-on-the-test example.
*How do you suppose a person could change his/her mindset?
ReplyDeleteMaybe be experiencing a setback so they know that they are not perfect and will fail sometimes. This will prevent them from thinking that they have reached the peak of their performance and all that is left for them is to go downhill from there.
I agree with you. Sometimes people need to experience a setback in order to know that their life won't be perfect all the time. You need to learn that no matter how many times you fail the important thing is that you always need to try hard to get back to where you were or maybe try even harder than that. Failure can motivate people to try harder.
DeletePrompt:How do you suppose a person could change his/her mindset?
ReplyDeleteAnswer: I believe that a person could change their fixed mindset to a growth mindset through humiliation. When someone is consistently praised for one specific skill or talent, that praise can develop an ego. That ego results in a fixed mindset that causes that person to not cultivate their skill. However, through humiliation, people often see there is room for improvement, which can result in a change in their mindset.
So, what I think you're saying is that fixed mindset people will be changed into people with a growth mindset if they face things the hard way, right?
DeletePrompt:*Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI think that there is a fixed mindset on when someone is cheating. They are thinking that they are doing the right thing when they cheat on a test but they are not doing the right thing. They do not have a growth mindset because they do not know that what they are doing is not good for the environment. When someone is cheating on a test and their friend goes and talks to the person who cheated on the test then their friend will think that cheating is a good idea let us do it to. I also think that when someone cheats on a test that means that their friend is thinking they can do the same thing. When kids have a fixed mindset they will do anything to keep their personality up. They can also cheat and get away with cheating.
In one of his interviews, Will Smith said that he was "motivated by fear." He is talking about the fear of failure. He fears that he may never get a chance to reach his full potential, just because he didn't work hard enough. He fears the fact that he may not even become a little better, because of his laziness or self-doubt. It is because of this fear that he pushes himself to work for longer hours, more days, and with less breaks. We can apply this same concept into our own lives. We can be motivated by the fear of not becoming more skilled, and push ourselves to work harder. This fear, though, is different from the fear of not fitting in and not looking smart. Will is not fearful of being considered stupid, but is scared of the fact that he may go back to his original talentless state forever and never improve. We, too, can find a passion and work to become better, motivated by the fear of not improving.
ReplyDeleteI like your example of using Will Smith's self doubts. I think that seeing his point of view and the struggles he went through will encourage others to fight their fears. You have a really good analysis on this quote!
DeletePrompt: *Will Smith says he's "motivated by fear". What does that mean? How can we apply that idea to our lives?
ReplyDeleteBeing "motivated by fear" means that fear is the only thing stopping you from doing what you want. Your motivation comes from telling yourself that you can do anything while your fears shouldn't be getting in the way. This quote can be applied in many ways throughout our lives. If we are scared about something coming up in the future, we should challenge that and go for it. In school, we shouldn't be afraid to tryout for sports teams or worry about test scores. Being scared about it won't do anything besides make you upset. Overall, the main idea of Will Smith's quote is to go for anything because your fears will make you feel worse.
I like how you applied the quote to our high school experiences. Your analysis was insightful and well thought out!
DeleteVery true. I like how you showed that fear is what we face in school and that we should overcome it.
DeleteIn Lynbrook's case, I feel that they should all face the fear of how presentable they are in terms of grade letters, and instead, focus more on the knowledge they are acquiring. In the long run, those letters won't do nearly as much for their future as much as the learning they have the chance to take.
DeleteIndicate if there was ever a time where you changed your thinking from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. Describe the transformation.
ReplyDeleteOne time I had thought I could not improve on my writing in any way, which was thinking in a fixed mindset. I had given up on trying to improve. Later I had decided to try again and try harder. I found that I was able to write better than I did before trying. I read teacher comments on where to improve on my writing. Thinking in a groth mindset helped me develop my writing farther, instead of thinking I was unable to write at all.
I really like how relatable your response was. Often when I'm writing I face many of the same problems as you. I often settle for less than my absolute best while writing which hinders my development in writing.
DeleteOn the Lynbrook campus, there is a strong correlation between cheating and a fixed mindset. Many of us are taught from a young age that we are supposed to be smart, and we are put on a pedestal when we receive a good grade, and we are greeted with disappointment when we perform poorly on assignments. This teaches many of us to prioritize the final letter grade over the quality of the information we retain. When faced with challenges on tests or on projects, many students panic and do not know what to do. Desperate to achieve the "A", several of them resort to cheating.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I have seen this around campus too. To add to that, a lot of the times, this fixed mindset also creates cramming, where we don't remember the information and care more about the grade.
Delete*How do you suppose a person could change his/her mindset?
ReplyDeletePeople can change their mindsets by pushing themselves to take on challenges and by understanding its okay to get bruised up in the process. They need learn to get back up when they fall, but also to always see room for more improvement when they succeed. Slowly, their mindsets can change after they realize failing is a part of learning and improving as long as they keep on going.
I agree. Sometimes all it takes to change your mindset is to just understand that the end of the world has not come by just making a mistake, but sometimes it just takes longer to realize that fact.
DeleteI agree with your answer because the way that you change a mindset is by actually going through the process at first and it needs to go through tough times to develop.
DeleteThere are many ways to change a person's mindset. Usually people that have fixed mindsets think that always doing well is the only option. People should accept failure and not think that it's the end of the world. People should not feel the need to do better than others.
ReplyDeleteI agree. People should realize that it's not just about getting straight A's and good grades, it's about making mistakes and learning from them. They have to be open to feedback, and accept that they're not the best at everything.
DeleteI feel like yes, there are people who can change their mindset. People who have a fixed mindset, although the process will be easier said than done, it can happen. But first, the person must be willing to realize that they will fail, and failing is not a bad thing, that it could help you. But more dangerous, I believe it´s easier to go from the growth mindset to the fixed mindset, when they go from working hard got when they do not need to work more, when they already are smart, you will be very tempted to become lazy, to not try at all, to become engulfed in their own pride.
ReplyDeleteI agree. People with fixed mindsets should realize that you can't just take one small step to be successful. You have to work hard and mistakes are bound to happen along the way. You also have to be careful not to be caught up in your pride.
DeleteDo you think there's a correlation between cheating at Lynbrook and fixed mindset?
ReplyDeleteAt Lynbrook, many of the students have spent years being told that they are "smart" and "talented". Many students did not struggle with subjects throughout elementary and middle, and when they reach high school, students' classes start getting harder and their workloads getting heavier. When they can no longer manage their work without struggling, their grades and self-esteem drop, and they assume it's just because they're not intelligent, or they are not capable of the work. The failure scares them and decreases their self-worth and they don't believe they can work harder improve themselves and their grades. Their stress leads them to cheating- something that will give them the satisfaction of good grades but no real learning and no real growth. Cheating at Lynbrook is a byproduct of fixed mindset.

Delete*Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI understand that the "correct response" would be to say something along the lines of a fixed mindset resulting in arrogance so overpowering, when faced with hardship, you would crack. However, this is not the whole picture. Fixed mindsets are not the issue administrators should focus on. After all, correlation is not causation. No matter how much you tell someone, your 4.5 GPA IS a requirement. At Lynbrook, there is only one chance for you to obtain said 4.5 GPA. Thus, a growth mindset would be pointless as it relies on learning from mistakes with no headroom to blunder. Cheating is, ergo, the consequence of the pressure on students to perform well with no fallback. They resort to less virtuous methods of work as a result of being forced into having a fixed mindset.
I mean, the pressure that turns people into a fixed mindset could come from the administrators or the general students around people. Just saying.....
DeletePrompt: Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteA fixed mindset thinks that they have to look smart around people and believe that not looking smart is a failure. Because of that, if a fixed mindset person encounters a difficult problem, they will refuse to accept the fact that they can´t answer the problem. Instead, they will try to get the right answer- even if the right answer comes from cheating. Particularly on the Lynbrook campus, where there are stereotypes of being smart, people feel the pressure to fit that stereotype and get good grades even if they have to cheat.
I agree, I see this problem occurring at Lynbrook daily, and We've been here for 2 weeks. If already students desire to be recognized, what good will it do if they cheat to accomplish that?
Delete*Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there is a very strong, undeniable correlation between cheating and having a fixed mindset.
A fixed mindset thinks, "Since if you win you're a winner, if you lose you must be a loser." This pressures people to somehow prove that they are NOT a loser because they have NOT failed. Not realizing that failure is a milestone on the path to success, they think of failure a permanent label.
This thinking leads people to cheat, because the pressure (usually either self pressure, peer pressure, or parental pressure) of always being a winner is so immense, they don't want to risk failing and then being labeled as a failure.
I totally agree. Just because you fail in something, doesn't mean that you're automatically a loser. Just learn from your mistakes and you'll succeed the next time you come across it. Nobody's perfect and everyone makes mistakes.
DeleteI believe there is a great connection between cheating and having a fixed mindset. The most common ethnicity here on campus include Asian and Sub-Asian. Both groups put a heavy need to be greater than the average intelligence. With the information given by the videos, It's obvious that the greater population of the schools students has a fixed mindset. Having this subconscious feeling of yearning to be the smartest, is not only due to the fixed mindset that we may have, but the social structure that seems to naturally develop in schools. In this case I believe that the natural way to respond to this situation is to either take two paths. To attempt to learn and improve, or to continue on and build an illusion that you are in fact intelligent. As the second option is the road most taken, the fixed mindset might not be able to cope with failure, and the only option it believes it can resort to is to cheat. The correlation between cheating and Mindsets are a threat to students and their futures.
ReplyDeleteI particularly liked the way you said that the students at Lynbrook often have a higher priority for education than most schools.
Delete*Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe there is a strong correlation between cheating in Lynbrook and having a fixed mindset. In this neighborhood, the pressure is very intense and we are given many high expectations at a young age. Therefore, the people who get good grades are classified as smart, and the ones who don't aren't. This leads to us having a fixed mindset because we believe we are winners to begin with, or losers. Because the competition is so high, some people would do anything to get a good score to reassure other and to themselves that they are smart because they have a high score, so they cheat. You can see this cycle which shows that having a fixed mindset leads to cheating.

DeleteI somewhat disagree. The root cause is the lack of, so to speak, not enough room to work with. Without a manner in which one could fail and recover, growth is not possible. Teachers need to learn to teach such that this pressure of a one chance is relieved.
DeleteA person could always change their mindset. A growth mindset could change to a fixed mindset. If someone thinks that they cannot do something, then they are not going to be able to do it. In order for people with fixed mindsets to change, they need to be open to the idea that they can do better. They need to realize that even if they don't succeed, it doesn't mean that they should give up trying. If they continue to believe that they could do better, they will succeed.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I believe that a person could change their mindset. I think these mindsets are instilled into peoples minds at a young age, which I think makes it difficult for them to change, but I do think it's possible. I also think it's equally difficult to leave a fixed mindset and change to a growth mindset as it is the other way around. For a fixed mindset, it's difficult because it requires a success from an unmotivated individual. For a growth mindset, usually failures just motivate the individual to improve.
DeleteI think there is a strong correlation between having a "fixed mindset" and cheating in Lynbrook. People who have a "fixed mindset" often don't try as hard in the subjects they've failed in before, as mentioned in the Ted Talk video. They become unmotivated to learn or improve because of their failures. These people also tend to care more about whether or not they come off as smart to others rather than caring about if they've actually learned anything. The combination of these two mentalities often times leads to them reaching for easy ways to get a good grade, in this case, it's cheating.
ReplyDeleteI agree that people with a fixed mindset are afraid of failing, so they will try to prevent failure. I think that people with a fixed mindset should learn to understand that failure promotes growth and is not something to be ashamed or afraid of.

ReplyDeleteWow... Nice vocab.
DeletePrompt:*Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI think that there is a fixed mindset on when someone is cheating. They want to be successful and "smart" so they try to get good grades at all costs. This includes cheating. They do not have a growth mindset because they do not know that what they are doing is not good for them. At the moment they may seem smart, but soon enough cheating wont be able to help them. When you have a growth mindset then you will not need to cheat. You'll work harder and be able to get the grade you want on that test.
"They do not have a growth mindset because they do not know that what they are doing is not good for them."
DeleteWait what?
There was a time that I changed myself from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. When I had a stroke I was in the hospital for 6 weeks. I thought that I would never get better and that I would be stuck in a wheelchair forever. But then I started to work on my physical therapy and soon I could walk with the assistance of a cane. My hand could also pick up some blocks with a pincer grasp. That's when my mom told me "Sachi if there's anybody who can get better you can." That completely changed my thinking. I realized that I needed to get better in order to get back my normal life. I was willing to do anything no matter how long it took. This is how I developed a growth mindset.
ReplyDeleteYou have a very inspiring story that will motivate many people to change their mindset and how they view their life.
DeleteMany people who have became successful were just like you, they had to overcome a big obstacle in their life to become who they wanted to be.
Prompt: Will Smith says, "Just decide who you're gonna be and the universe will get out of your way." Has that ever happened to you? Explain.
ReplyDeleteFor some motivational and famous people, they have persevered through life with what they believe and what they wanted to be in this world. They didn't allow anything change what they believe.
However, there are many other people that had lost the perseverance to continue. For instance, many children cannot become who they want to be because of peer pressure from others. People are always judged and teased, and forced to believe and become what they don't want to be.
Fortunately, I have family and friends that support who I wanted to be in this world. However, I have seen some people that were judged and insulted for what they strived for. And this has resulted in many people compelled to do something else that didn't motivate them.
I agree with you. I have definitely experienced something like this before. Sometimes, when people believe fully that they can do something that seems impossible, they actually do it.
DeleteHow do you suppose a person could change his/her mindset?
ReplyDeleteI believe someone can change their mindset simply by believing that they can change, that their success is not fixed. The mind is malleable, and it is possible to change what you believe. You have to do away with the idea that failure is unacceptable, and that success is determined by how people view you. They need to challenge themselves, and when they fail, to realize that it does not change how successful they are, and that they can in fact improve.
I agree with your reasoning especially when you bring up that people with fixed mindsets have to think that the idea of failure is unacceptable because it is the primary reason that they cannot change. What makes people with growth mindsets stand out from the others is their willingness to learn and accept failure.
DeleteHow do you suppose a person could change his/her mindset?
ReplyDeleteI think that the dichotomy between the mindsets exist in the way that the world is perceived. If they view the world through an optimistic lens, then they will view it as comforting, welcoming, a place where you can strive to improve yourself. If they view it like a pessimist, they they will constantly be afraid that others are judging, they will be afraid to try to improve and instead try to look smart. The prevalence of a fixed mindset is caused by the way they view the world(or life in general). That is the root cause. To change the mindset, one must first change their view of life.
I agree. The key to changing one's mindset is changing the way one perceives life and the world. That can be as simple as just realizing that because you have failed at something or not done as well as you would like does not mean that the world is going to end. Instead, that failure can set you up for future success IF you learn from your setback.
DeleteI agree with everything you said, but one thing i might add to your opinion would be That pople that want to change there mindset should also love to fail and hate to win

ReplyDelete*Will Smith says he's "motivated by fear". What does that mean? How can we apply that idea to our lives?
Being "motivated by fear" is a good thing because by doing what you fear, you are overcoming it, and it is part of a growth mindset. If you have a fixed mindset, you wouldn't even imagine doing what you fear because you might think you can't do it. With a growth mindset, you might want to take on the challenge, and once you conquer your fear, you will feel accomplished and accepting to even more challenges. We can apply this idea to our lives by being open to new ideas, even if they might be hard or scary. By doing this, having a better mindset, we can achieve anything.
I agree. Overcoming your fear is a part of growth mindset and an important factor in achieving everything that you want to.
DeleteHow do you suppose a person could change his/her mindset?
ReplyDeleteAnyone can change their mindset at any time. For example, people with fixed mindsets are being controlled by their fear of failure. They resent being looked down upon, and having the feeling of shame. Failure is the one of the stepping stones towards success. Mostly everyone who is successful today will go through failure at least once because we are never perfect. Failure is what shapes us, and differentiates us from having either a fixed or growth mindset. Having accepting failure as part of the learning process, a person with a fixed mindset is able to change and grow towards a growth mindset with the motivation and attitude. On the other hand, people with growth mindsets can also change into fixed mindsets. This typically happens when a person with a growth mindset is showered with too much praise and compliments. All of a sudden, they think that they are talented no matter what and they stop trying. Another factor is that these people may have the tendency to give up or fear failure when they are complemented too much as they have high self-esteem and they do not want to fail in front of others.
Will Smith says he's "motivated by fear". What does that mean? How can we apply that idea to our lives?
ReplyDeleteWhat he means is that we should put our best efforts into something because there is nothing to be afraid of except for fear itself. To fear doing something is to say "I can't do it". This is a fixed mindset. The person who says they are unable to do something is blinded by that person's belief that because past event have led them to failure, they will fail again. We can apply this to our everyday lives by challenging ourselves to go further. If we stay in the safe zone, where we know we cannot fail, how are we to learn?
I agree. If you don't go out of your comfort zone, you would never be able to move forward and learn new things.
Delete*Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI think that there definitely is a correlation between cheating and the fixed mindset. The fixed mindset makes the people believe that they cannot fail at all costs, and that other people will judge them if they do fail. It creates excessive pressure to do well in everything, which causes cheating. People with a fixed mindset are tempted to cheat because they want to look good, but they don't see what they can learn from a failure. They are pressured to do well because they only want the good grade, and so they cheat so they can attain it and be praised. Also, the way a child is brought up can really influence their mindset. For example, a child who was always praised because he or she was "smart"(fixed mindset), will have a different mindset than a child who was always praised because he or she worked hard(growth mindset). Children who were praised because they were "smart" will probably incline towards cheating because they were brought up with the belief that proving that you're "smart" is the only way to get recognition. Children who were praised because they worked hard, would probably not cheat because they know that it's okay to fail, and they can learn something from it.
I agree with your paragraph. I think that there is a lot of pressure at Lynbrook to not fail. We are taught that failure equals stupidity, and that is not the case at all. a
DeleteWill Smith believes that one is motivated by fear. Fear is often a thought that is a result of our belief that we cannot raise ourselves to a certain standard. The reason you are afraid of trying something or failure is that you believe you are not capable or that someone will always be above you. Will Smith is trying to convey the message that because you are afraid, it should motivate you more to overcome that fear and prove to yourself in this internal battle that you are truly capable of what you believe you cannot accomplish. Fear is a reason to try harder, as once this fear has been overcome, you grow tremendously and overtime become more successful as you face and overcomes hurdles in your life. We can apply this idea to our lives in situations where we are the only people holding ourselves back from our true potential. When we lack a talent, when our goal is not our forte, when we are afraid we are not good enough: these are all fears, and thus a reason to be motivated and use our growth mindsets. Working triple the amount as someone to get the same result results, is growth for you as a person.
ReplyDeleteYes,I agree with you. Fear is something that we all need to face, and try to conquer, and it motivates us to try harder and grow, even if you struggle.
DeleteI agree with you on this as well. I believe that fear is something that drives us all. Sometimes it is the fear of failure and sometimes it is fear itself, but no matter what it drives us to become better. I think that it forces us to become better versions of ourselves.
Delete*Do you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there is a correlation between cheating and fixed mindsets because in school, the fixed mindset people would want a A on their report card so they would continue thinking they are smart. The fixed mindset people will cheat because they would still want the A on the test and if they don't get the A the fixed mindset people won't be satisfied.
I agree. When people have a fixed mindset, and get a bad grade they tend to believe cheating is their only option to get an A.
DeleteDo you think there's a correlation between cheating and a fixed mindset?
ReplyDeleteYes, I think there is a correlation between cheating at Lynbrook and a fixed mindset. Those who have a fixed mindset are afraid to fail and lose. When they forgot to study or complete an assignment, they are more willing to cheat rather than learn from their mistake. Those with a growth mindset would rather learn from their mistake, and remember to study next time. We also know that people with a growth mindset care more about learning instead of how smart they look on paper. These kind of people would take this mistake as a learning opportunity. People with fixed mindsets are used to being told they are "smart" and "talented". Many of these kids use these compliments as an excuse to not put effort. If they get away with cheating, they will think that they are very sly and that they can get away with it all the time. Although the school punishes the student for cheating, cheating itself is a punishment to the kid. When you cheat you do not learn anything. Their brain starts to rely on cheating to pass the class. Once the semester is over, they realize they have learned nothing. Especially at Lynbrook, there is a lot of competition and many people find it necessary to cheat. If everyone keeps a growth mindset they will not be afraid to fail. They will know that it takes effort to achieve greatness.
Shreedevi Rao, I agree with you on all of this, It true that sometimes when people don't study it could lead to that outcome, I learn from my mistakes in math all the time.
DeleteI could assure you that if somebody is less social with others, it is much harder to get optimistic. Seeing the world around yourself having a much better time talking to people and learning about themselves makes you have this kind of rage that is quiet, but is as bad as the kind of rage when someone beats another person.
ReplyDeleteDo you think there's a correlation between cheating (on the Lynbrook campus, in particular) and the fixed mindset here on campus? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a connection between cheating on the Lynbrook campus and the students who have fixed mindsets. People who have a fixed mindset only want to focus on how they look, rather than to focus on making themselves become a better person; meaning that they only think, "Do I look smart enough?" If a student with a fixed mindset at Lynbrook failed a test let's say, he/ she will only think that they're a loser, or they're not smart enough, and they'll always fail. And later on when they have another test, they will cheat and look at another student's work and copy it on their paper, making them feel "smart" and thinking that they passed that exam. And even if they did pass that test, they still cheated because they had a fixed mindset and for not studying the topic as well.
How do you suppose a person could change his/her mindset?
ReplyDeleteI think a person can change a mindset by taking more challenges and being a hard worker. Just like the video, the students who were confident and was told they are smart, it makes them think that they are really good at what they do so they don't do as good, they struggle. On the other hand you have the kids who like to struggle and like a good challenge so that they can always be improving on their work. Like that graph/chart in the video of how the kids who took challenges and who like to struggle got so far up in grades, with the other section of kids got low scores because they didn't push themselves to challenges.
This could all change of kids/people changed their ways and went for a challenge of any kind, if it would be in a class or somewhere else, just step up for the challenge.
I agree with you when when we watched the videos with the tests the ran on the kids and then when the kids who were told they were smart came to to something they don't know who to do they just give up but the kids that aren't in a fixed mindset they just kept trying until they got it.
DeleteHow do you suppose a person could change his/her mindset?
ReplyDeletePeople with fixed mindsets tend to believe that their abilities stem from pure talent, without any hard work or effort. To change from a fixed to a growth mindset, the first step would be to accept mistakes and think of them as learning points rather than loosing interest and moving on to a different task. The next step would be to take on difficult challenges that cultivate the mind and help learn new skills.
A person could change his/her mindset from fixed to growth by imagining that their intelligence is represented by a ball of unmolded clay, and we know that it will not change itself unless we do something to it so if you change to a growth mindset then you can shape your mind in anyway you want it to be, and be self succesful in the end.
ReplyDeleteI really like and agree with your analogy of unmolded clay.
DeleteMost of my mindset is a definite set mindset because of my family background that triggers a voice that tells me I am born to always be above others. With this mindset, I often give up not because I can't do it, but because I'm not the best at it. I only feel relieved if I met my expectations, instead of being motivated to be better. I've known for quite a while that my mindset is dangerous, but it is hard to face the fear of not being the person I think I should be.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I have experienced the effect of having a growth mindset. I strong example of an experience with a growth mindset is my success in improving drastically at a sport that I had learned in such little time. I have sat down and thought about how my success was due to letting part of my mind opening to a possibility of growth. I had come into a badminton class without even knowing how to touch the birdie with the racket, while every other person could all at least rally. With the mindset I had, I came home with a hard time being okay with myself. I always hated the thought of being looked down at especially at the degree on that day, so I had a strong need to quit like I have in every other situation like that one. The next day, my dad told me,"If you are at the bottom, you have more room to improve. You can show those people who look down at you that once you rise, you can surpass any expectations." From then on I was motivated to practice almost every day and making small goals along the way. Of course, it was still hard to accept failure on the way, bit I learned to be with it and use it as motivation. Quickly, I had gotten promoted to an advanced class that took me less than a year to get into, while others who've been there 3 years still had a long way to go. I've surpassed my own and everyone around me's expectations. Most importantly I have opened up hope in myself that I can do anything I want to with the right mindset and the right motivations. With all that I have accomplished, I learned that I won't be satisfied or disappointed with any expectation I have surpassed or haven't, but instead, I will use my experiences to push even further. Therefore, I gained an open mind to my oncoming badminton class. I am open to the fact I most likely will be at the bottom of the class once again, but I will eventually work my way up once again.
When he said that motivation is fear he means that when you are scared of something you just need to use that as a reason t want to do it more even if it takes you longer
ReplyDeleteA famous person that I believe has over come his failure is Tom Brady. He was picked late in the draft and became the first QB to win five Super Bowls and break several records.
ReplyDeleteI feel as when there is cheating here at Lynbrook it has a connection towards a fixed mindset. Lynbrook is a high ranking public high school, which can make the learning environment really competitive. Almost every student will be aiming for straight A's for the whole of the school year, partially due to the influence of parents. This may affect students to fear their parent's disapproval when they get a low score. As a result of this, desperate students may cheat or lie for a better score.
ReplyDeletePrompt: Who would be a famous figure you believe has overcome his/her failure to become successful? Explain.
ReplyDeleteJ.K Rowling is the author of the widely known book series, 'Harry Potter'. She was "poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless," and a single mom. She was rejected 12 times before it was published and was told to keep her day job, but she kept trying and trying until she found a publisher who agreed. She is now worth 650 million dollars.
Her quote, "You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default."
Shows that we are all going to fail in life, and we have to accept it and use it to help us. Everybody fails and if you focus so much on failing, you automatically fail. She learned from previous mistakes and used it to help her improve. I think it is important to remember that failure is inevitable and we have to use it as a tool to help us, not tear us down.
